Blessing of the Grapes – 2026

The Blessing of the Grapes is a cherished tradition in the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrated each year on the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (August 6). During this service, grapes and other first fruits of the harvest are brought to the church to be blessed, offering thanks to God for His abundant provision and asking His continued blessing upon the coming harvest. The custom reflects the biblical practice of presenting the first fruits to God in gratitude, recognizing that every good gift comes from Him.

For Orthodox Christians, this blessing is about far more than the harvest itself. It is a celebration of God’s transforming grace, revealed in Christ’s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, where His divine glory was made manifest to His disciples. Just as the fruits of the earth are offered back to God with thanksgiving, the faithful are reminded that they, too, are called to be transformed by God’s grace and to bear spiritual fruit in their lives. Visitors are warmly welcomed to experience this beautiful tradition, which reflects the Orthodox Church’s deep connection between worship, creation, and thanksgiving.

Our Blessing of the Grapes at Whatley Wines is an extension of this ancient feast of the Church, bringing this beautiful Orthodox tradition into the heart of the Texas Hill Country. We invite everyone – Orthodox Christians, neighbors, visitors, and wine enthusiasts alike – to join us as we offer prayers of thanksgiving and ask God’s blessing upon our local vineyards and wineries.

Our hope is that this will become an annual Fredericksburg tradition, growing each year to include more local wineries and vineyards as together we celebrate the harvest, give thanks to God, and share the beauty of the Orthodox Christian faith with our community.
